Hosting FAQ

The images in this document are from Microsoft FrontPage 2003.

If you already have a website someplacec on the web and wish to connect to it, simply go to File > Open Site. This will bring up the following window:

If you have previously connected to the website, it should appear in the box above, but if you have not, simply type the URL of the website into the Site Name box. After doing that, it should prompt you for a username and password. Enter them, and the site should open. If you did not type the URL in correctly, chances are it will not connect to the site.

On the other hand, if you would like to create a new website, look to the window which is shown above. Under the New Web site heading, clicking More Web site templates... or One page Web site... brings up a window.

In this window, you may pick any of the templates listed, and decide where on your computer files will be stored. This location is set by the Specify the location of the new Web site box. You may browse for a location, type one in, or simply let it choose a default location.

In order to publish the completed website, you must go to File > Publish Site...

After that, the following window should appear.

If you know that the server you are uploading to has FrontPage extensions, choose the first option. Otherwise, you may wish to ask how you should set it up.

Assuming you do have FrontPage extensions, you may fill in the box marked Remote Web site location with the URL you want to publish the web site to. You will be prompted for a username and password, and then the following window will appear.

The left window shows the files that are on your computer, and the right shows those that are on the server. Files that match those on the server will be marked, just as the ones that are unmatched are marked like the one above. By selecting a single file in either window, you may publish just that one, or a select few. However, if you wish to publish the entire site, at the the bottom of the screen, you may pick either Local to remote (it only uploads files from your computer), Remote to local (it only downloads recent/changed files from the server to your computer), or Synchronize (which both uploads and downloads to get the most current versions of all files). Clicking Publish Web site will then start whatever action was chosen.
